He’s only been here 5 years and has made some competent hires since arriving. Everyone knocks Weaver, but it was during Weaver’s era that Tech’s men’s and women’s soccer teams made the final 4 and it was Weaver who hired past coach Oliver Weiss and current coach Adair. It was also Weaver who made the Dresser hire. Tech made top 5 status in wrestling under Babcock’s watch, but I think Weaver deserved the credit for hiring a HS coach from Christiansburg. And neither Weaver nor Babcock should claim credit for Beamer as that dates back to the brief Dutch Baughman days. But I do wonder if, back in 2000, when Beamer almost went to UNC, if Weaver had any role in convincing Beamer to stay? Women’s basketball may be a wash between these 2 ADs. I’ll give Babcock the edge over Weaver in men’s basketball, but Greenberg was a good coach too (but Hussey, Stokes and Johnson we’re not).

So, when looking back on Tech’s very good soccer teams and our greatest football, those were all done under Weaver’s watch, whether you loved him, hated him or were indifferent. Wrestling was done under Babcock’s watch with the caveat I stated above.

But it’s only Babcock’s fifth year. Let’s see where he takes this program in 5 more years.
